Condolence From: Steve Rausch
Condolence: I had the pleasure to serve with Ed for several years in OPDIV at Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile in the 1990s. We flew the HU-25 and stood many duty nights and deployments together. He was a skilled pilot and was a trusted friend to me over the years that followed. I will always remember one particular flight with him. We were conducting his aircraft commander syllabus cross country flight, but all did not go as planned. Upon arriving in Northeast for some practice approaches, we had a landing gear malfunction. After following our emergency procedures, and still not getting a “down and locked” indication on our right main landing gear, we prepared for the possibility of the gear collapsing on landing. Fortunately, it was a safe landing, and we later found out that it was just a malfunctioning microswitch giving us a false indication. I sometimes still fly into Stewart International Airport with Fedex, and will always remember Ed’s calm and cool demeanor in handling this critical situation. I will always miss his friendship and sense of humor. I take comfort knowing that he is in a better place with the Lord now.
